Like most mothers, my mother always told me (and still does to this day!) that if you don't have anything good to say to someone, don't say anything at all. Well, in the financial services industry, and especially in these economic times, my mother would be washing some people's mouths out with soap! With all that is going on in our country and specifically our industry today, including the effects upon the insurance business by the economy in general, not many people have good things to say. There are those who are looking at the soft market and looking for it to turn hard, and then we have insurance carriers and agencies either unable to, or finding it more difficult to turn a profit, and are looking to cut anyway that they can in order to impact their bottom line in a positive fashion. Companies such as AIG and WaMu are looking to either turn over its branding and its name, or merge with a firm that they can be absorbed in to and acquire their name. So with all of these companies and their senior level executives preaching disaster, it is certainly comforting to attend industry sponsored events that are shying away from preaching all of the doom and gloom that we have been accustomed to hearing for the past year and a half, and are instead showcasing high powered speakers who are courageously willing enough to share their optimistic opinions of our industry, and the future that we are destined to ... well at least some of them anyway! Sorry, Mom!
